The rain began before dawn.
Not violently, not with the theatrical force that sends people running toward windows, but steadily an old, deliberate rain that seemed to have nowhere else to be. It gathered on the roof, moved through gutters, found cracks in concrete, carried dust from the streets, and exposed every place where preparation had been postponed.
